Absurdity

Last night, I made a spinach and feta pie for dinner. It was lovely, but you'll have to take my word for it. Sonny Ma-Jiminy certainly isn't going to say anything good about it.

He didn't even taste it. He just gave me the following excuses for why he couldn't eat it. I grabbed a pencil and paper after the first few because it was just too surreal:

1. I used to eat pie. I don't anymore.

2. I only like egg pie.
(Me: Well you're in luck because there are 4 eggs in it!)

3. It's not ... 'egger' (i.e., 'eggy' enough.)

4. It's got too much sugar in it. (This has been my recent reason for disallowing lollipops and sugary drinks.)

5. I'm too cold for pie.

6. I'm just too hot for that pie.

7. It's not tasty for me. There's no salt on it.
(I told him that the feta is very salty and the pie therefore has plenty of salt in it.)

8. I don't like salt.

9. Pie is not my favourite.

10. It stinks.

11. It makes a sort of hot thing in my mouth and it tastes like .... avocado.
(I reminded him that he loves avocado, and ate his avocado burger at kindy this week.)

12. I don't [like avocado] now.

I think he is going to be a negotiator when he grows up!

Isn't it funny how they make up all kinds of excuses?

If it makes you feel any better - I would have tried the feta and spinach pie!

Awesome.
We have "no thank you bites" in our house. But before he takes that bite, I get a list similar.

That's wonderful. At least he was consistent about rejecting the pie. My daughter had a phase where if you asked her to help with anything she would feign a broken limb. Ex. "I can't clean my room, my leg is broken." Then she'd lay paralyzed on the floor until we got tired and walked away.

Look on the bright side, at least he knows how to formulate an argument, however spurious. I would have eaten his share in a second. Yumm! He'd probably have wanted it then.

Personally I don't blame him. Feta and spinach are two of my least favourite food items. The only way it could be worse is if it was brussel sprouts, feta and sun-dried tomatoes.

Of course, being a polite grown up I would have felt obliged to eat it. Oh to be young enough to simply refuse it!

I'm on your side Sonny, Mrs Jen.

My little food critic told me his juice was "Yummy on the edges, but yukky in the middle."

Future wine taster?

Mmmm...how I look forward to when Miss M is said age.

Is this an age thing or is it simply a genetic blessing given Sonny Ma-Jiminy's startling similiarities in vocab ability to his cousin? :D

At least he doesn't dismiss dinner altogether! Here we get "I HATE DINNER!" every night. I have just taken to saying that it is second lunch time!

I can't blame him though, feta is kind of icky. No, it is VERY icky.

But I would have taken one no thank you bite, just for you!

Wow! His brain works fast. I don't think I could come up with that many excuses to not eat something like acorn squash when i was little.

Wow...the things they can think up to NOT do something!!! :) Thanks for preparing me for my son's silliness!

And I am wondering....what exactly is a spinach/feta pie? How can you go wrong with spinach, feta AND pie? :)

You probably should send him to Washington, D.C. to work for the U.S. State Department. He can negotiate deals, and help keep the peace with anyone who wants to start anything up with us! :)

Givinya, I sometimes reckon your Sonny is an adult in a tiny body!!

What a crack up!

(I had a similar coversation with C over some soup just last week! Though he didn't have many excuses except I CANT LIKE IT! *rollseyes*)

All I know for sure right now is that I want me some of that pie!

stumbled across your blog today and have enjoyed it much. your humor is good for the end of my day, hiding in my room with the computer, leaving my husband with the kids and the after dinner mess.

That is too funny. My daughter is like that if I put mushrooms in something, she makes all kinds of weird excuses, but yet she ate moutain oysters, oh wait, she had No IDEA what they were.

Oh, my goodness, that is cute. He took a page out of my Bethany's book. I love #9, Pie is not my favourite. That's what we tell our kids they could say to be polite about asking for a small amount.
